Having a property manager who knows the ins and outs of HOAs is always best. Accreditations are proof of an HOA manager’s commitment to community management. Here are industry organizations any HOA manager should be affiliated with and why accreditations matter.
Community Associations Institute
The CAI is a non-profit organization educating and representing the different residential community associations of America.
They also include professionals and service providers affiliated with community associations. The CAI is a national-based education firm that gives different designations based on the property manager’s education and experience.
As a property manager, I personally hold one of the two higher positions within that: the Certified Manager of Community Associations (CMCA) and Association Management Specialists (AMS).
Certified Manager of Community Associations
The CMCA is the only international certification program created specifically for managers of homeowner and condominium organizations as well as cooperatives.
The annual Community Association Manager Compensation and Salary Survey features the salary differences between managers with and without professional credentials. It has been found that community association managers with CMCA certification often make 20% more than those without.
Association Management Specialists
The AMS is for community association managers who want to further their knowledge and expertise in the industry.
To earn an AMS designation, a community association manager needs to have verified experience, complete designated courses, and pass the qualifying examination. On top of that, you need to pay annual maintenance fees and redesignate every three years.
These designations prompt me to continually develop my skills as a property and community manager. Boston HOA Management is one of the few firms that continue to push for education, as well as growth and knowledge, so we can provide a better service for our condo associations.
As a homeowner, you should always go with an HOA management company that has designations and accreditations. Hiring a qualified, board-certified community association manager is the best way to protect your investment property, yourself, and your residents.
